    TOP FLIGHT ORIG vs RESTO

WHEN PREPARING TO TOP FLIGHT, ALONG WITH ALL THE NORMAL THINGS SUCH AS NO'S,
CONDITION, ORIGINALITY, ETC. THERE IS A CONSIDERATION GIVEN TO CLEANLINESS. QUESTION:IS THE ABSENSE OF DIRT, OILS, GRIME, ENOUGH WITH THE PRESENCE OF RUST. IF THE VECHILE IS USED SUMMERS AND KEPT IN EXCELLANT CONDITION INSIDE AND OUT EXCEPT FOR THE UNDER CARRAGE RUSTING A PROBLEM WHEN APPLING FOR TOP FLIGHT? AFTER ALL IT IS ORIGINAL WITH SOME CONDITION. MAYBE I SHOULD BE APPLING FOR SOME OTHER AWARD OR RESTORE THE UNDERCARRAGE? PERSONALY I DO NOT SEE WHY IT CAN NOT BE JUDGED ORIGINAL WITH SOME LOSS FOR CONDITION, NOT A LOT OF LOSS EITHER.

It can be judged as original in Top Flight. This is one of the reasons for driving points to be added to the raw score. It helps compensate for deterioration that occurs on a driven car. A properly cleaned and maintained original chassis may score well. A lot depends on the area that it began it's life in and the kind of driving. A car that was driven daily in Boston probably would have considerably more deteriation than one the was driven daily in Los Angeles. It is hard to make much of a determination without actually seeing the car. Bring it out for judging and have a good time with your car.

            Ray,

My 1972 coupe is all original (Bowtie car) and has 3 Top Flights to its credit (Chapter, Regional and National) with 60,700 miles. It has always been a Michigan car, and as a result has some surface rust of most of the chassis and undercarriage.

Clean it and judge it. You'll be surprised.

                Mr. Wittington,

For a second, I thought you were teasing me. My East coast, probably Boston car, is now out in the L.A. area. I found a parking stub under one of the seats from Dorchester, Ma. Yah, the frame does have extensive surface rust!

March 12th there's a meet at the Peterson Museum in L.A. I'll be one of the 'Obsrever' judges. You can stay on my couch if you're heading out this way.

                Justin
