    Distributor Cap - 1973

What is the correct part number for a distributor cap for a 1973 L-82?
Also what would be the correct patent number on the top of the cap?

    Roger-----

The part number used in PRODUCTION was GM #1971244. However, all 1971244 are not "created equal". While all have black plastic composition and aluminum contacts, the script or lack thereof on the top varies.

So, what was the script used on the cap for 1973? I don't know. I always ignore and/or avoid that issue.

        Roger,

A fellow NCRS member recently referred me to a company called, Yesteryear Antique Specialists, Electrical & Ignition Parts, Dave Soltow, (941) 743-7784. I had a very informative conversation with Dave, during which he provided me with more history than I knew ever existed on the GM Delco Distributor Cap. He is very knowledgable and was quite eager to share it. With additional information from him, along with further clarification from the '73-'74 NCRS Team Leader, Marvin Burnett, you may be able to decifer the correct distributor cap markings.

I have seen two caps with abreviated part numbers of D308R and D309R claiming to be for 1970's Corvettes/GM. Both have different patent numbers embossed on them. Just wondering if either or both are correct.

                Roger----

These numbers are the Delco parts system part numbers for distributor caps. The GM #1971244 is ONE of a series of GM part numbers assigned to the D308R and the D308R, aka 1971244, is the cap that was used in PRODUCTION for your application.

The D309R, aka GM #800061, was, for many years, specified by the GM parts system as the SERVICE distributor cap for your application. However, it was not used in PRODUCTION. The D309R is usually, but not always, seen manufactured of dark brown alkyd plastic. It's always manufactured with copper contacts/terminals, though.
