Re: C2: Build Date vs. Delivery Date

Build date and delivery date are dependent on the type of order that was generated. If the order was a sold order for a customer then they could be fairly close together. The accepted in transit time for GM in that period was 10 days. That meant that they did not begin charging dealer floorplan interest for 10 days after the shipping date in order to allow sufficent time for the vehicle to make it thru the transportation system. Most vehicles were delivered within the 10 days to the dealership and the dealership then scheduled delivery to the customer ASAP. If they could get it done within the in transit time there were no interest charges.

If the vehicle was ordered for stock it was delivered when sold which could be as much as 1 year from build date or more. When it was sold it was delivered. If you go to a Chevy dealer today you may still see 2004 Corvettes in inventory. These cars could have been built in July/August 2003 and sat in inventory since. Not likely but possible.

        Tony,

I agree, the most common time span for sold units would have probably been somewhere between six and twelve days but there was one type of delivery that could have been done within one day of assembly. In the 50's and 60's, it was possible to take delivery of a new Corvette at the St. Louis assembly plant which would have eliminated the transit time. If I remember correctly, this was discontinued sometime around 1970 for a number of reasons. Also, the dealer right across the street from the plant would have gotten their new cars a lot faster than, say, a California dealer.
