    69 ZL1 @ Orlando

Hi All: Any of you who attended the Florida meet may have gotten a look at Rogers Corvettes 69 ZL1, the only time I was by the car the hood was closed. I noticed that the hood was a stock big block with no L88 / ZL1 bluge, could it be Roger has a clone for display thus avoiding the insurence liability ?

I saw the same car, always with the hood closed too, but it was a L-88 hood with the big bulge, not the stock BB or LT 1 style. Chuck

Thanks for clarifying that my eyes did not deceive me. I was pretty sure that I saw an L-88 hood, not a stock 427.

I dunno guys, I looked then looked again, I wasn't close and obviously blew it, sorry, I still would have liked to see the hood open otherwise it's just another 69 BB that didn't sound like anything out of the ordinary, should have sounded like aluminum ???

          Sounds like Aluminum

          Jerry,

Yeah, it makes that funny exhaust PING like some of the stainless steel exhaust systems do, you know what I mean? (Just kidding :-))

The car to hear is that orange Gulf 69 conv out of Pittsburgh PA, allegedly former ZL-1 now with an L-88. It has aftermarket side exhaust, and you can hear that baby half a mile away. If that car doesn't make your blood cells turn to Bowties, nothing does.

You should have seen that car in the first Special Collection at Bloomington in 1984. Wayne Walker of Zip fame like to burn the tires off that thing. There was so much smoke in front of the Bone Student Center you could not see for 10 minutes. It also made real nice noice.

That "other" ZL1 belongs to John Maher. I remember that he used to run it at autocrosses put on by the Corvette Club of Western Pennsylvania at Greengate Mall. Ran into John in Ocean City Maryland a few years ago and gave him several pictures of his car from back in the 69-71 time frame "at speed" on the autocross courses. I'll never forget the first time I heard that car start. It would literally shake your "innards". He ran the car at the drags at Keystone Raceway at the NCRS Nationals in Seven Springs a few years ago. Turned in the low 11's as I remember. Chuck

                That's the One!

                Chuck,

Couldn't remember his name offhand, but yes, that's it. I look forward to seeing that car occasionally at Carlisle, Bloomington, etc. I'm hoping Joe L's car can excite me in the same way!
