    Apprasial

I'm going to need my 55 appraised after its done this spring.

Would having it judged serve this need or does NCRS have such a service at it's events?

I don't want to have the car judged for judgings sake, becouse I have read the judging books and know that while my car looks and operates very nicely, it would not schore high.

ncrs doesn't give appraisals when a vette is judged. some buyers will use the judging outcome to place a value on the vette. best get a licensed, trained, honest appraiser do the job for you. good luck, mike

      Pros and Cons

A professional appraisal by a recognized appraiser is what's typically needed for special interest/collector car insurance policies. It sets a specfic value or value range on the car. These forms of insurance policy have 'plug figure' for the car's value in the event of total loss.

Now, a standard policy operates on the concept of ACV (actual cash value), meaning they will pay the car's 'current' value at the time of loss. This is typically determined by blue book tables--useless for a classic collectable!

When you have a car judged at NCRS, you get no $-value figure. You only get a score sheet & award that's based on what percentage (0-100+ percent)of factory original the car was deemed to have been in. So, that doesn't do much for the company trying to write a collector's policy and affix a $-figure to the car.

BUT, if you intend to actually drive your car on a regular basis, having it judged CAN be a source of value. A standard policy lacks the restrictions typical to a collector policy (limit on number of miles/year of operation, requirement to have a permanent garage base, prohibition against parking it outside unattended, Etc.).

If you buy a standard policy and have the car judged on a regular basis (say once a year), you build a 'doomsday' file that PROVES you maintained the car at X-% of originality over a period of time. Should you have a total loss, that file can be used by a good lawyer to argue with the insurance company what your ACV was by simply hiring appraisers expert in the art....

So, while having your car judged is NOT what most insurance company's want, it's (a) fun, (b) inexpensive, and (c) and can be valuable in some cases....

        Re: Apprasial

I think that most owners would be surprised how well their car would judge. Especially if you drive it to a meet. Driving points add the the end. Pickup ten points for fire extingusher, NCRS Decal, and battery cut off switch. Less than 2% of the total (4,500) points alocated are for cleanliness. Granted it needs to be clean enough for the judge to see what he is looking for, but it is not a "wax and shine" judging. We try to encourage more owners to bring their cars out. Verrrry few cars have failed to obtain at least a Third Flight.

Bring it out for all to see.

          Re: Apprasial

I had a apprasial done on my 65 before it was finished. Doors interior ect not completed. I was worried a fire or something would destory the car and be left with nothing. The apprasial gave a value to the car as it was and then added that if the car was finished to the same standards another value. When the car was finished and judged he amended the apprasial to show its value. The value was increased because of a Top Flight award at that time. Judging can help and increase the value. Mike

I found this neat auto fire extinguisher at the local hardware. The mounting requires no holes to be drill. It has a velcro like pad on the mount which sticks to carpet without adhesive. I put in on the jack compartment cover behind the passenger seat on my 67 convertible. It's always within easy reach.

Jerry, That mounting is not a good idea. We found at NHRA that these become a missle in an accident. We do not even allow spring clips on fire extingisher mounting brackets, because they come open in an accident. Again racers have been hurt. I realize this is extreme compared to cruising but I would mount mine in the jack compartment solidly. Count this as a "for what it is worth" THREAD. Dale

On a roadster I see most of them in the corner of the windshield. Have seen a few on side windows but I do not think that is a good location since the window travels up and down by the wipes each time. Could tear or scratch decal

Jerry, If you put in the corner of the windshield, I would be aware of the date location and avoid putting the sticker over the date code.

I sold at Auction two years ago a 55 in Reno Nevada, for $60,000.
BUT it had the wrong engine ,car converted rear end ,wrong Radio,
                          NO side curtains,soft top,jack,
                          MANY things didn't work
But it was soooooooooooooo pretty and I had the Plasticon hard top on it.
This was all stated on the form saying sold as is.
People get mad at me for saying that I would never TRY to sell a Corvette to a Corvette guy, what I said above is WHY, you must remember MANY ( not most) people that buy at Auctions buy looks and paint jobs ,not weather it has a TR or WB1 bolt in the right place. Many sellers go get their top Flight , then remove all big dollar original items and go to Auctions.

The bottom line in the (real world) is that if you keep your vett Pretty reallllllll pretty you will always get good money even tho it may not be all original.
With out even seeing it, if it's reasonable original looking inside and out,and is blinding looking at the RED color. I say $50,000 bottom dollar.

                            Dale,

It's pretty secure in the location shown in the picture from side to side forces. You have to pull straight up to break the velcro mount from the carpet.

It's a Kidde "The Auto" 5 BC for others who have asked.

As a geezer driver, I think it's pretty safe for me, but your advice is well taken.
