    59 Dash Console Replacement

I have a 59 with a dash center console that looks like "Bubba" worked on it when installing an aftermarket radio that I am replacing with an original Wonderbar radio. Can anyone assist me with some directions on how to replace the center console? Easy to remove? Procedure? Does it support the center of the dash? If so, are props needed on either side when replacing? Thanks in advance.

Removing the center console is easy, but takes time to remove the package tray support, the console plate and part of the cowl vent handle. If "Bubba" just cut a wider opening for the radio, you can leave the center console in and re-fiberglass the cut area back to the original cutout.

To remove the center console; remove the radio speaker, the package tray support, the upper & lower mouldings, the console plate, (clock & heater controls) and disconnect the cowl vent handle. Using a sharp wood chisel, break the the bond filler from the inside at the bottom. Do the same at the top lip. Remove the center console. Use it as a guide to mark the rivet location for the cowl handle, and screw locations of the package tray support. It should be painted interior color. you can do this after installing, your option. Apply bonding paste at the top lip area and the bottom. install by pulling the console down from the top setting the bonding paste. at the bottom apply some more paste to fill the area between the console and tunnel fiberglass. Reinstall everything and you are "get-to-Go"

mark, dennis' 2nd method is the most correct way but seems a lot of work and pretty invasive. mine was butched up and i just worked with mat and resin to reconstruct and body filler to finish. you need to see another for all correct dimensions but mine has held up pretty well for several years using dennis' 1st method.
