Getting on an unhitched car trailer

Do you put a couple of jack stands under the rear of the trailer when you drive up the ramps on an unhitched care carrier to keep it the trailer from flipping?

    Thanks

Either that or make sure it's attached to the tow vehicle when loading/unloading!

Re: Getting on an unhitched car trailer

Loading a car onto an unhitched trailer is not a good practice. The trailer can and will develop a mind of it's own! The tow vehicle stabilizes the trailer and keeps it from rolling or twisting.

IF you must load an unhhitched trailer, use jack stands or blocks(better choice) to support the rear of the trailer. Also chock the wheels of the trailer on both axles to prevent the trailer from rolling. A car rolling up the ramps will push on the trailer and make the trailer want to roll forward.

It is a good idea to support the rear of the trailer even when it is attached to the tow vehicle. I have seen the rear wheels of my tow vehicle actually come off the ground when a heavy vehicle(pickup or Tahoe) is loaded on the trailer(with no support under the rear of the trailer). A few extra precautions can prevent serious damage or injury.

          Thanks for the info.

You'd think that the trailer people would provide a feature to attach a jack or whatever at the back of the trailer for safety even if the trailer is hitched.

It ain't fun trying to chase a moving trailer with the car you are trying to load. Or trying to get off real fast to stop the uncontrolled movement. Don't ask how I know this or which time, car, pickup, or two farm tractors

Actually some trailers do have jacks permanently mounted at the rear to stabilize them during loading and unloading operations. At least I have seen some. Maybe braces would be a better term, however. They are like large versions of the C2 & C3 Corvette jacks, and look just about as sturdy. Maybe they are an option on some trailers. Personally, I wouldn't think of trying to load or unload a trailer that was unhooked from the tow vehicle, but that's just me.

most trailers will lift in their front if a car is loaded on them while not hitched to the tow truck . its foolish to load an unhitched trailer. however, my 5th wheel box trailer is heavy and stable enough to do so unhitched but i've been labeled a fool by many in the past. mike

Use ratchet straps to attach your ramps to the trailer. I know from what I speak.

Looking at you Corvette hanging in mid air becouse one ramp kicked out is not a good feeling.

That's why I now have a trailer with a ramp door.
