I have heard in the past of owners swapping out the stock 2 speed powerglides in C1's in favor of a 4 speed manual. In the 1960 year, the stock rear end ratio for the powerglide was 3:55 and the 4 speeds were all different. Would this stock rear end with the 3:55 be a good choice to keep with the new 4 speed or would you want to swap out the rear end to a different ratio? Why? The other question on this is: as the powerglide C1's don't seem to be very popular, would it help or hurt the value of the car if the 4 speed was installed properly?

Re: C1 Transmission swap
The 355 would be OK with me. The value may hurt a little now, but you have to remember most NCRS guys are , OLD and getting OLDER , that will raise the price well over the price of the 4 speed in time .He He- Top

Jim, Believe I'd do the tranny swap even if it lowered the value by $5K. Stock 2 speed PG should be hooked to a boat with a rope.- Top

Re: C1 Transmission swap
Not if that's what came originally in the car. There is nothing wrong with a properly rebuilt powerglide. Not as Macho as a 4-speed, but depending on your driving habits, motor, etc, can be just as much fun for you.
For some people, sports car and automatic just don't go together. It's your car do what you want! Just my old two cents!

Re: C1 Transmission swap
3.55 will be fine. I've got a 3.70 in mine. Runs 3500 rpm at 70 mph. Little high. Which is why I think a 3.55 will be good.
Might hurt the value. People seem to prefer 4 speeds over automatics. But we're getting older. Maybe the automatic will become more desireable. Would certainly hurt the value if you have a correctly numbered car. The engine number (suffix) will now be wrong.
What's the worry? This is an easily reversible modification. Might help the value when you go to sell with both transmissions.- Top
