I have an early (#900 built) 1960 with the 283/270 engine. I am trying to determine if someone swapped out the original radiator as my car does not have an aluminum cross flow unit - it seems to be the standard unit (same as 1959 and for 1960 non 270 and 290 HP cars). I am certain (to the degree one can be) that my engine is original as I know much of the history of the car prior to my ownership, but can't figure out the radiator. Did GM use the aluminum radiators from the start of production in 1960, or did they start with the first smooth tank top aluminum radiator in the first cars? Thanks.

Re: Early 1960 Radiators
Current Judging Guide text says all '60 270/290 horse cars used the aluminum radiator with there being three running change revisions of the unit. Wouldn't be a surprise for a car equipped with an aluminum radiator to have 'lost' it over the years with a less expensive, easier to find, brass unit replacing it. BUT, the core support was also unique to the aluminum radiator....- Top

There is an early '60 270 that is VERY
original here in Phoenix and he ALSO has the "regular" radiator - these use a different radiator support and none of his appears to be tampered with. It certainly would not be out of the question for the plant to have "run out" early in the year - for some reason, high performace orders seem to dominate in the early part of the model year. I'll get his VIN and get back - I don't think he wants a call at 6:10 AM.- Top
