3171489 is the part number for the F-40/41 REAR shock used for 1963 through about 1969. You will only find it in a P&A catalog as a "stamped as" number. In SERVICE, the GM #3171489 shock was known as GM #3166560. If you bought that part number, you would get a GM #3171489 shock in the box, but the box would have GM #3166560 on it. Alas, you haven't been able to buy that part number since April, 1970.
The 3171489 shock had the large "coullee hat" upper shield and the tube section was 2-1/2" OD. Later F-41/FE-7 shocks, both PRODUCTION and SERVICE (including 63-69 SERVICE) were smaller tube OD and had smaller "coullee hats".
