Mine was chrome on my '70... And that about sums up my knowledge of C3's...

Four speed shifter has black chrome in 69, 70; chrome in 68. Auto shifters have black plastic.

And all these years we were told that you were a "vacuum head".. Hmmmm. Maybe they meant something else.

                Das' All Right, Dennis...

I stray onto the C1 and C2 reservations sometimes and get into all sorts of trouble.

Thank you gentlemen. And I feel a little like a vacuumhead myself, as I can't find my TIM/JG anywhere. Looks like a trip to the online store is in order!

I assume that holds true for all '68 to '72's? I have heard varying stories of people swearing that their chrome (not black chrome) knobs were the originals.

For 68-72, chrome was one year ONLY...68. If those people have 68s, they are correct.

                      The leather alternative....

When I picked up my '71 convertible from my uncle's estate and started to drive it cross-country home, I noticed there was a 'hookey' leather cover hand stitched onto the shift ball. The stitching was badly worn and I peeled it off and threw it away.

Beneath the leather cover was a BADLY WORN black chrome shift ball atop the 4-spd shift lever. It looked 'out of place' on the bright chrome shift lever. With the top down, I stopped for lunch and parked.

When I came out to restart my journey, I grabbed the shifter and howled in pain! The black chrome finish, basking in the summer sun without cooling air motion was as hot as Hades....

Now, I understood why my uncle had stitched a cover for the shift ball. It also explains why we see so many early Shark cars wearing the '68 bright chrome version of the shift ball! So, I keep two balls on hand...a bright chrome ball for daily driving and a black chrome ball that only comes out of the wrapper for those times the car drives onto the NCRS Judging Field!

Uncle Jack, did you tee that one up deliberately? And, what's up with all that talk about the "leather alternative"??

And, for once, I used some restraint...

...and left Jack's comment untouched. Never agian.
