69 Vette differental to frame HELP!!!!

I am restoring a 69 vette. When I removed my control arms their were no shims. But their is about an inch of play on each side of the bushing. Before I set my rear end, should I use the shims or remove them? When I push up on the control arm I am verily catching the rubber stop pad. Right now I am shimmed so the control arm is right in the middle. Does any know the correct way to install.

Bolt the differential in. Refer to the assembly manual. Has little to do with the trailing arms. Just make sure all the parts are there. The shim pack at the trailing arms should add up to a total thickness of 3/4 inch. Put 3/8 on each side and call it good for now. After you get the car on the ground you can do an alignment. If you go back into the archives you might find some information that will tell you how. Use the strut cam bolts to set the camber and use the shims to set toe-in. But wait till it is all back together.

Terry, now that was good, short and to-the-point advice. I am also reassembling a 72 convertible chassis and sort of figured that is what I would do but not sure. Thanks! Great question too!
