The car I'm considering purchasing a '66 roadster with a St. Louis body build date J20 on the trim tag. The engine pad stamp date is T0607HT with a block casting date E146. The serial#24597 falls towards the end of June production. All the information seems to "line up" correctly to me. Anyone see anything I'm missing that might indicate otherwise?

Re: '66 TRIM TAG & ENG STAMP PAD DATES
Looks good to me - the Birthday Book says June 21st for the off-line date, which squares with the June 20th body build date on the trim tag, and the engine date sequences work with those dates.- Top

Re: '66 TRIM TAG & ENG STAMP PAD DATES
HT is a 327/350 hp code. I would not expect to see a T (Tonawanda) engine stamp on a Corvette (Flint built) engineBill Clupper #618- Top

I understand what you are going through!
Rob. I am going through exactly what you are going through. I'm looking at buying a '66 Coupe located out West. The whole stamping pad/trim tag issue is part of my inquiry also. You don't want a restamp and you want to make sure that the trim tag is the original, unmolested trim tag. I retained a super nice NCRS judge in the area where the car is located to go and verify for me that it is a "real" car (among other things, that the stamping on the engine block is genuine and that the trim tag is the original one). It's one thing to run the numbers through the books to make sure that they are correct, but once you get past that initial inquiry, get an experienced NCRS C2 judge to eyeball the car for you. IT WILL BE WORTH EVERY PENNY YOU PAY HIM!!! We both want to feel great about the cars we buy, and we don't want to be in a position to have to defend the authenticity of our purchases to our collector friends or judges. That expert will help you accomplish your goal. I'll tell you, just from the help I've gotten over the last week during my "due diligence" my NCRS membership fees have been repaid in terms of my benefits multiple multiple times. There are alot of real smart people in here; I wouldn't be afraid to ask for help.
Good luck!

ps. I could be mistaken, but I thought all the 327 blocks for '66 are F stampted and not T stamped? If I'm wrong, please tell me.- Top

Re: I understand what you are going through!
Tony,
I agree, I had someone who's opinion I very much trust look at the engine stamp pad and it was determined to be factory original. I've spent hours looking at the car in every respect. I know there will always be something missed, but I want it to be minor. I found some items original to the car that I wasn't expecting to be, which is always nice. Now it's a matter of making a final determination on what I would like to pay for the car... always an interesting part of the process...- Top

Re: I understand what you are going through!
Rob. It's hard to get a sense of what these cars are worth right now. The stock market seems pretty shaky, so people are putting their investment money into tangibles and real estate. I don't see that changing any time soon. My sense is that prices are going to remain pretty strong. When I find the right car and the price is pretty much in line, I'm going to pull the trigger.
Good luck!

Re: '66 What about the tranny/rear end Stamping?
Now that we know the engine is original, what about the transmission and rear end? Did you get any codes/stamping off of them? (VIN on tranny along with date code stamping.) The rear end should have a ratio code along with the date code stamping. In my book, this is part of a "Matching Numbers" car. Keep us posted on these numbers also.- Top

Re: '66 What about the tranny/rear end Stamping?
Ken,
I agree that's definately a big part of a "matching numbers" car. The transmission is close ratio with matching vin# stamping, and the differential is properly dated and coded "AO"(3:70) Thanks for your interest....- Top
