OK, however
Roy –
The shift marker is indicated by how the date tag is attached. Each tag is symmetrical with two countersunk holes, two 6-32 screws hold it in place. It is brass, 1.375” x .312” x .060”, with cast brass alphanumeric characters soldered onto it. The tag is inserted flush into the cope pattern housing flange on SB’s. They were recycled and continually made for the weekly production schedule.
The Chevrolet Saginaw Grey Iron configuration is; two flat head screws indicate 1st shift, one flat head and one round head for 2nd shift, and two round for 3rd shift (rare). Of course my drawing only dates back to 1952. The method in your outline may have carried over from the Oldsmobile cylinder & case.
The cast in hour marker will show the production hour, with the first hour of the shift starting at the two dimples and indexed up to ten hours. This I can track back to an early ’64 detail drawing. It is trivia but interesting.

Re: telling time
Thanks once again Roy for posting that info, I found it very interesting. What puzzlels me is how you find all this info, you are a great researcher. Everytime I search for somethimg, I come across your commentary & advice it has always been correct.I don't know how many other NCRS members have a disability, but you sure have been saving me time & most important money. I hope Dale posts what NFG is. I just had to ask Jim Clemens what TIM & JM stood for this morning. For us newbies, I'm also speaking for those of us who have compromised cognitive abilities, your info is most valuable. Thanks,
