We Have narrowed the search for the change over to the new style hand brake handle for 68 to 72 to early 70. I have had reports of 70s with the early style handle. Those of you that have a 70s please check them and report. Thanks.

Re: Brake Handles Revisited Again
Wayne, I'd love to help, but missed the earlier thread. How does one tell the two types apart? I have an early '70 s/n 4012 B18 build code which is for the most part original at 45k mi and one owner before me. Mine looks like the one drawn in the 70/72 Tech manual. Are there differences more subtle than that drawing indicates? ~Juliet2019 Sebring Orange 8-Spd Coupe (daily driver & autocross) 6k mi.

Re: Brake Handles Revisited Again
Ok, here goes one more time. The early style has a diamond cut pattern on the grip. This pattern extends all the way to the bezel on the end of the handle. The second type has a pattern of small dashes , and the grip pattern has a border completely arround it. ie. If you look at the front edge of the grip pattern it will have a small 1/8 inch border between it and the front bezel.- Top

Re: Brake Handles Revisited Again
Sorry I missed the earlier thread on the subject.
So, if my '70 has a diamond cut pattern (if I'm interpreting your word descriptions correctly) AND a 1/8 inch border all the way around it and the diamond cutting is only on the sides of the black plastic piece what does that mean? The pattern in the plastic handle is definately on the diagonal and does not appear to be the dashed version you described. There's 2 photos of the brake handle on line. They're not a real good closeup and don't show much detail, but it's what I had already developed and scanned in. You can make out the 1/8 inch border in the photos. Possibly they're useful enough for you to tell if it's original or a replacement part?

Re: Brake Handles Revisited Again
Well, I used to think that all brake handles were the same in the shark era... I was wrong! My 70 #2802 with build date B05 has the dot pattern type handle with small flat area around it as mentioned. I count 45 columns of dots (staggered). Roberto, NCRS #30019, RMC- Top

Re: Brake Handles Revisited Again
Well, I'm still not sure what this pattern is called. I got a closeup photo of it today. It appears as if the diamond pattern was created by cutting V-grooves on two diagonals. I'm sure that's not how it was made, but if you picture that process the handle texture looks like that same end result. It's really hard to capture the texture on film.. for me at least. ;) But there are obvious borders around the pattern with a thinner border in the front and a larger one on the top. ~Juliet2019 Sebring Orange 8-Spd Coupe (daily driver & autocross) 6k mi.
