Plan to paint the main housing of 1964 instrument cluster with semi flat black Krylon paint. Just noticed that one cluster I have has flat silver paint on the raised ring around each guage, however have another with same rings painted black on sides. Which is correct??

Re: C2 Instrument Cluster Painting
Alan,
Look closer and you'll find more differences in the two bezels. The original 1964 bezel had silver around each gauge and the 1965-67 were painted black. Check out the lettering around the ignition switch. There should be difference there.

Re: C2 Instrument Cluster Difference
JR
Thanks! the lettering is different around the ign sw. I thought that the gauges from 64 to 65 were different, however these are all the same style in both frames.
Oh well I guess the short timers is increasing to long timers.
Thanks again.- Top

Re: C2 Instrument Cluster Difference
Alan,
You are correct that the gauges from 64 to 65 are different. Here goes a little info on the gauges and bezels from 63 to 67.
Bezels
Early 63 to Late 63
Late 63 thru 64 Late 63's had an adapter of thin sheet metal around the column but it was a 64 bezel
63-64 gauge bezels were painted silver around the gauge rims with chrome edges and the black background, silver around each raised lettering area.
1965 thru 67
65-67 gauge bezels were painted black with chrome edges
Instruments
63 had the aluminum spun cone center
64 had the black stepped center
65-67 all the same with the exception of 65 having a 240 degree temp gauge
63 had 60lb and 80lb oil gauges
64 had 80lb oil gauges
65-67 had 60lb and 80lb oil gauges
Tachs were determined by the HP rating
Hope this gets you on the track to the correct bezel and instruments for your 1964. If not we will try again.

Re: C2 Instrument Cluster Difference
Hi JR,
Excellent information that naturally lead to more questions,
The guages in my second cluster frame are all 64 style, black cones. As we both agree the 65-67 were flat faced.
The 2nd cluster frame has all 64 guages in it (240 temp gauge).
The frame cones are painted black and the ign sw is labeled differently - from left clockwise to right (ACCESSORY OFF ON START) while my 64 says (ACC LOCK OFF ON START) the hole for the ign sw is round with a 3/16 square locator notch at 4:00 while the 2nd frame has an area of the hole at 1-3:00 filled in.
The back side of the frame shows some differences also, largest is at ign sw.
1st one has two fins 3/4" apart starting at temp gauge and extending to ign sw. the raised area (looking at rear still) has also been cut down an attachment is scewed onto the area containing a light. The 2nd frame has no such area with the entire back area raised.
There are som other minor casting differents, however both have the number PT-6048125 with IMP- 1 below follow by an elipse star with G3 in center.
Is this an early 65 or just a replacement somebody did. Gauges were obtained in the mid 1970's Some marking on Tach/Speedo area but hard to read.
Any idea's?- Top
