Before I install my L79 intake, I am in the process of cleaning it up. I am probably going to paint it aluminum cast color, and I can use one of several different types of paint. Question is, since the exhaust gas passes through the manifold for warm up purposes, does that mean I have to use a paint capable of exhaust gas temps good to 1400 deg F, or is regular engine finish OK for the manifold? I have a can of Aluminum cast finish that matches nicely the color of the natural intake, but it says it is good to 500 deg. F and "resistant" to solvents, gas, oil, etc. I have seen Hi temp aluminum paints that you have to cure in the oven. Which should I use so that the paint holds up in the hot areas where the exhaust gases pass? Your experiences would be appreciated.

If you want the paint to hold up in the exhaust crossover area, then you're going to have to use the very high temperature paint. Even using that, I would not be surprised if it discolored after awhile in the exhaust crossover area. Even bare aluminum will discolor in this area.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
