    1958 Master Cylinder

    In my 58 ALL the numbers on the master cylinder are as described in the JM, on page 71.
    Only difference is that the 022 is in larger digits. It says "Beginning about January of 1959, the MC casting number had the last three numbers (022)in larger digits". I am confused, one NCRS member said it "IS" the right master cylinder for my car, while another NCRS member says it is not correct. Is there a logicl explaination why my car has the larger 022, other than it was obviously replaced
    because of malfunction or swapped. I would hate to take it out if it IS correct. I am having the car Flight judged in March. This car won Top Flight in 2000, it got -2 deduction out of 10 for originality, no deduction for condition. In the comment area on the judging sheet it says;
    (xxx 022 not typical).Can someone clarify this for me. I have the opportunity to trade for a MC with the small 022 & it needs to be rebuilt, a very expensive service. Corvette Central gets 209.00, to rebuild. The one in my car works fine. I would like it correct, but for a loss of 2 points... Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Deb

    Debra,

    Apple Hydraulics did mine for much less than $200 (see http://www.applehydraulics.com/index.htm)

    I don't know about the correctness of your cilinder but I would be very carefull with discarding the part since often things turn out to be a bit different then what the majority takes for granted.

    greetings,
    Rob.

      Deb,

      One part of the decision...

      Is it worth $200+freight both ways to gain two points?
      Is there another place to spend the $200 that would gain more points?

        Your 58 should have the small 022. I think Mary Jo has rebuilt 022's for $295 or White Post does them for $150. If you can get a rebuilt one for $295 I would keep the large 022.

          On the judging deduction, absent specific guidelines (in the JG text, in the Judging Reference Manual, e.g. Standard Deduction Tables), judges divide originality points items in a five axis universe (Finish, Date, Installation, Configuration and Completeness). Your LARGE '022 master cylinder is identical in all respects to the factory original SMALL '022 with the exception of its Configuration (large vs. small emboss).

          So, the judges deducted 20% of the available originality points on the part because it violated one of the five originality axis. 1/5 x 10 points = a two point deduction.
