Is it my misunderstanding or is the distributor-mounted capacitor wired wrong in this photo? The ad says "It has earned the Bloomington Gold award, the NCRS Top Flight award and the NCRS Performance Verification", but according to my sources, and the detail photo in the NCRS JR, the cap is connected as a ballast in the distributor wire, but the one in the photo is being used as the ground connection for the distributor wire shield, which doesn't make any sense to me electrically. Is this just a case of they are so rare it slipped by?
I don't know the answer to your specific question, but some comments are in order.... First, all the different award systems (Flight, Certification, Spinner) allow room for SOME level of deduction(s) and the car to garner top honors. So, just because a car earned the top award somewhere doesn't mean it's 100% 'perfect'....
Second, if the ignition coil cap is connected to the wrong side of the coil primary, all that happens is you dramatically reduce it's ability to reject RFI. Most judging meets are held in major metro areas where RF signal strength is typically high. The radio interference items on these cars were predominantly designed to provide for reception relief when listening to AM stations under FRINGE signal strength conditions. So, it's possible for an 'opps' to go unnoticed.
Last, just because a given car won this/that award, doesn't mean that it's in the same condition today as when it was judged! That's one of the reasons serious buyers tend to gather around the awards ceremony exit ramp at Bloomington and attempt to buy the cars THERE/THEN! They don't want the owner taking the car home and 'modifying' it prior to sale/delivery....
Spent a lot of time finding and installing the distributor (not the coil) cap, and then this thing shows up wired completely differently than mine. This was one area where the originality of my car was no help, because my cars' Mallory capacitor was discarded decades ago, for unknown reasons.
OK your hurting my brain , it took a while to see what you meant! Your right he used it as a ground.
It should have the coil and point wires "two" going to it.The ground wrapping is grounded to he Dist Housing.
The hose you see in the pic, is for the OIL EYE gage I wrote about here.
No, I picked one up NOS a couple years ago, wired it like yours is, not the one in the ad, radio much happier now. There is a guy who keeps offering 55-57 headlamp switch cap on eBay, mine is missing, but I can only think it prevents clicking sounds in the radio when operating the headlight switch. Since I only turn the lights on about twice a year, I'm thinking this is $50 I don't need to spend.
