OK....I've got another perplexing (for me) issue about how the tire fits in the spare tire cavity. Anybody got any idea why my wooden spare tire cover fits about 3/4" above its resting place? I've got a 6.70x15 tire with a 5" rim @ 24psi. I did NOT expect to have this problem! The cavity requires 6 1/2" and my tire is 7 1/4" thick!
Thanks,
Brad
common problem with today's repo tires which are fatter than their grandpappys were in '55. either leave air out of tire(read no functional spare) or tighten plywood board and live with it.good luck, mike
Reproduction tires must be manufactured to DOT specifications, which require that they be inflated on a rim while still hot out of the mold, which results in a wider cross-section than the original (pre-DOT) OEM 6.70-15 tires, which were NOT inflated hot out of the mold.
I found a NOS 55 tire that will fit and the board lays flat. Find a old non-dot tire that may have some good tread and use it when your out driving . Replace it when your going for all those awards.
My friend has four original black wall tire from a 15,000 original 55 Chevy car, I can get them for about $30.00 each if you would like one plus shipping.
