This might be a long shot but were there any other delco alternators that used this type of front housing? In my quest to find one I have had people say that they remember seeing some on GM vehicals in the early seventies when they were still working in various garages. Funny thing is that they don't remember having worked on any corvettes back then. They seem to remember them being on Buicks or Olds maybe and that they can remember how odd it was to see so much of the stator windings compared to the other alternators of the day. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: "open face" 69-70 alternators question
Somewhere in the back of the great empty space called a brain, I seem to remember that maybe Cadillac used the 10SI alternator in 69 also. John Pirkle goes through several thousand alternator cases a year and tells me that these fronts are almost non existant. Lotsa luckDick Whittington- Top

Re: "open face" 69-70 alternators question
You are pushing your luck I just barely remember someone told me that the Caddy's used the same case. You ask the originator of the NCRS (never can remember squat) syndrome.
Seriously, I do not know the numbers. I have ordered the Delco Remy Master Catalog but it has not arrived. Once it gets here maybe I can answer such questions. Now what is it we were talking about??Dick Whittington- Top

Re: optional for Olds and Pontiac
Dick,
LOL
I'll never get this number thing straight I have a hard time telling mid years apart let alone alternators. Although I can tell a 67 from the rest.

Re: "open face" 69-70 alternators question
Greg-----
As it turns out, there were more SI-series alternators used for the 69 and 70 period than I once believed there were. Here they are:
1969
Pontiac and Tempest with heated glass (window defogger)--61A--GM #1100854
Firebird with 400 engine and
standard-----GM #1100832
w A/C--------GM #1100830
w heated glass GM #1100825 (same as 1969 Corvette)
Oldsmobile 4-4-2
std----37A-----GM #1100853
w A/C--61A-----GM #1100852
Chevrolet truck with 366 and 427 engines
42A-----------GM #1100833 (same as 1969 Corvette)
61A-----------GM #1100825 (same as 1969 Corvette)
1970
Oldsmobile
GM #1100880 (unconfirmed)
GM #1100890 (unconfirmed)
Pontiac
GM #1100801 (unconfirmed)
GM #1100800 (unconfirmed)
There may also have been other 1970 applications; I have not been able to research them all, as of yet. I can't find any 1969 or 1970 Cadillac applications that used the SI series, though.
Virtually all, if not all, of the 1969-70 SI series alternators would have used the "open face" drive end case configuration. VERY late 1970 MAY have changed to the 1971 configuration.
Think you'll find any of the above-referenced vehicles still out there with their original alternators still installed? I doubt you'll have very much luck, but have at it!In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: "open face" 69-70 alternators question
Well that sure opens up some options! You're right Joe about it being a long shot that any of these vehicals will still have this alternator but actually now that you mentioned it, I seem to recall an alternator in my GTO "pile of parts" with stator windings showing like these units have. Too bad these parts are at my Mom's and 12 hours aways.
Just curious what the "SI" series stands for...what does "SI" mean?- Top

Greg-----
I believe that "SI" is a contraction for "CSI" which decodes to "Charging System Integral". They had to shorten it because Delcotron series were denoted by 2 alpha-character designations. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: "open face" 69-70 alternators question
After reading your post I looked thru my core pile of some 300 and found a 10 SI 1100928 dated 1-B-25 which is open faced. My reference books indicate it is for a 71 Pontiac.- Top
