    67 spindle support casting date

Are the casting dates for the rear spindle supports judged? It seems that one of mine was replaced in the early 70's. It has a date code of C 18 0. "GM 10" is also cast into it.

I can tell you this: installed in the car, the dates on the spindle supports are virtually impossible, if not impossible, to discern. The pattern or mold number (i.e. "GM 10" or whatever) can usually be seen but is irrelevent.

What can be easily discerned is whther you have the 64-74 style spindle support or the later 75-82 support. The later support became SERVICE for 63-74 Corvettes in the mid-70s. These can be distinguished by the casting number (also virtually impossible to discern) AND the size of the boss at the lower end of the support (i.e. the section with the "D"-shaped hole in it through which the shock mount shaft is installed). The early style have bosses which are about 1-1/2" OD; the later style are about 1-3/4" OD. I can almost guarantee you that an eagle-eyed judge will catch this discrepency, if it exists.

If the date coding on yours denotes March 18, 1970, then you have no problem; it WILL be the earlier style as the later style wasn't "invented yet". However, if the date denotes March 18, 1980 or March 18, 1990, then you have a problem. The early style was long out of production by either of those dates. But, you can tell simply by measuring the OD of the lower bosses. That will "tell-the-tale".

Thnak you for the reply. I had a rear wheel lock up going down the road at about 75 MPH many years ago. This happened sometime in the eary 70's. I suspect the part must have been replaced at that time. It was kind of exciting, but not something I would want to try again.
