    Muncie identification

I have a muncie 4 speed main case #3885010, date? P0523, Side Cover #3884685. It has 2 grooves on the input shaft = M20?, bell housing #3840383. I would like to find out what year these parts are from. I have reviewed the archives and am amazed at the wealth of information that can be found here. Thanks for your help.

the 010 case was used in '66-67 only, the two rings indicates a wide ratio gearset. The 383 Bellhousing would indicate a smallblock (10 1/2 inch clutch-flywheel) assembly application. Any VIN info stamped on the case?

I found another number on top of the case on the drivers side in three different places - 7L130653. Also the number on the dash tag of this car is 40867 S 118315. Thanks again for your response.

        Ty,

The code P0523 on the trans means that it is a Muncie (P) and build in May (05) on the 23 day (23).

What is the casting number on the tailhousing? It should be 3857584 withy the speedometer housing on the passenger side.

        Regards,

        JR

          Ty,

Another indicator is the tranny side case cover tag if still present. It is held by one of the case cover bolts. 3870354 tells me I have a 3:36 posi with (wide-ratio) Muncie for my 67 coupe. Thunder woke me out of bed!

The 7L130653 is the KEY, it is a partial VIN for the car that it was originally installed. The 7 is the year (1967). You already have the month-day (May 23). As mentioned, an 010 case is 66-7.

The VIN says it was originally installed in a Los Angeles-built '67 Camaro.
