I have a 66 Big Block coupe which is being restored and I am considering adding side pipes. This car originally had the standard dual exhaust system but I would like to add some QUIET side pipes if they are available. The side pipes which I have heard are extremely loud and I want to know if anyone knows if QUITE side pipes are made for this 66 Vette.

Re: 66 Vette Side Pipes
Hi Larry:
You seem to be the exception, everyone else wishes to make their car louder. There are no quieter pipes that are correct that I know of however you could do the reverse of what I did to my 69, I had 67 pipes made to fit under my 69 covers in the interest of a bit more sound. The 69 pipes have a dual siamesed muffler system that is noticeably quieter than the chambered pipes from the mid year, the only downside is that the muffler section is visible below the cover a bit but then it is on the 69 covers also. Allens Exhaust can make you a pair with the correct outlets I have seen this done using only one section of the dual muffler also.Allens may have a different muffler that they can incorporate into this system for you by now.
Best of Luck

Re: 66 Vette Side Pipes
Larry:
I can't answer your question, but can only give you some advice. I'm currently restoring a 66 small block roadster that was converted before I bought it. As far as I know, my only problem with hearing is when my wife talks to me . Maybe the small block is quieter, but I don't think it's that loud, and in my opinion, it makes the car.My wife even agrees with me! If you haven't already, go for a long ride in one with side pipes, before you make your decision. When you,re driving down the road with 60's music blaring from the radio, you can hardly hear them, but your fans can. Good luck.- Top

Red herring
You say you're 'restoring' a '66 BB and in the same breathe say you're considering ADDING side exhaust. Purists at NCRS will tell you there's a logical disconnect here as our Flight Judging rules require a full deduction for owner/dealer inspired option addition/deletion....
There are numerous threads on the subject of side exhaust in the archives. Pro and con as to whether the option (if not originally a factory component of your car) adds or decreases value. Basically there are two issues to consider: (1) appearance and (2) exhaust tone.
If you want the jazzy appearance, there's no substitute for the real item, BUT it doesn't wear well if you plan to drive the car (rock nicks, chips, Etc.).
On exhaust tone, there's no such thing as a 'quiet' mid year BB with factory correct side exhaust. But, Mid America makes a VERY interesting variation on the theme -- a conventional through frame exhaust system with no mufflers and necked down pipes (a la the original N14 system). You get the tone of N14 low restriction, with pipes being through frame there's no body cuts/mods, and the exhaust exits at the REAR of the car instead of next to your ear on the side....- Top

Re: Quiet side pipes?
I know several guys who have installed small diameter "cherry bomb" type mufflers to the rear half of their chambered pipes. this requires cutting off the chrome tip of your original cham. pipes and re-welding to the new system. there is a muffler shop that does this proceedure here in Dallas. The new pipes sound great and the original look is maintained because the orig. covers hides the mufflers. later, Bob- Top
