    C2 PRODUCTION NUMBER SOURCE

I'm trying to find out how many '66 black on black roadsters were produced. Does anyone know a source for this type of information?

      Rob,
As Wayne said, the exact number of units that were black on black cannot be determined.

However, we can discover that in 1966, 1190 units were Tuxedo Black. Production for 1966 was 9958 coupes and 17762 convertibles.

Bye the way, the fewest number of 66's were painted Tux Blk. The next rarest color was Trophy Blue at 1463 units. Hope you find the info useful.

      Best regards,
      Gene

Some info avail on '66 Interior Colo(u)rs

Corvette News, Vol 9 # 4, surveys buyers' selections [somewhat before the end of '66 production], and says:

(includes vinyl and leather, if available in that color)
black interiors 45%; blue (dark ?) 15%; bright blue 3rd place; red 4th place (no %s given); balance of colors not broken down.

So for a black/black vinyl convertible, use your Probability and Statistics 101 to derive: 64% convertibles, of which 45% black interiors, of which approx. 7 %leather = approx. 7400 blk/blk vinyl roadsters (give-or-take 500).

            Wayne,

I follow your math, and think you meant to type 740, (instead of 7400?)

            Thanks, Rob

                Wayne,

If you start with around 1200 '66 black cars total, how can the number of black on black roadsters be 7400?

How about he's saying 7400 cars with black vinyl and black vinyl was used with other exterior colors beyond Tux Black?

The point is factory production records that we have today aren't as refined as what you're looking for. We know how many cars were built with a certain individual broadcast code item and, in rare cases, the broadcast codes were specific enough to comprehend other production items (e.g. XYZ posi rear end WITH ABC trans and 123 engine).

But, beyond those isolated cases when you want to get into compound probabilities (this exterior color, with that engine, and this transmission), the factory data doesn't exist! You can 'infer' some things, but that's all it is; an inference without supporting data....

                      Rob---

If you take the numbers out of the black book and use the information from the above post you can use percentages to get a guesstimation. Approx 64% of 66 vettes were convertibles. Logic would say then that Approx. 760 convertibles were Tux Black. If the above post is correct, then 45% of those would also have black interior = @340 Black/Black convertibles. But what do I know.

'72 was interesting year for interior color data

The only model year (to my knowledge) in the C2/C3 timeframe that gave, BY BODY STYLE, the numbers for all interior colors AND the numbers for black and saddle leather.

Re: '72 was interesting year for interior color da

For '66 CORVETTE NEWS reports black leather at 4.3%, Saddle vinyl 3.0% and sadddle leather at 0.8%.

Mmmm.... wonder how many saddle leather with headrest coupes there could have been???
