I pulled the fan off of my 63 340. 7 blade fan, 17.5 inches with 3955182 in large numbers and 914166 888 stamped directly below the larger numbers. I have no overheat problem now - if I go to a 5 blade could I create one? Thanks

Re: Fan ID
As original Harrison aluminum radiators began to corrode and lose internal heat transfer efficiency, a popular method of 'squeasing' more life out of them (reproductions weren't available until recent years) was to exchange the factory original 5-blade fan for a Corvette or passenger car 7-blade, A/C, fan. This 'trick' was also used when the original aluminum Harrison radiator finally 'died' and was replaced with an equivalent geometry aftermarket radiator made from brass vs. aluminum.
So, without knowing the specifics of your car (original aluminum Harrison and it's condition? replacement Modine style brass?), it's not really possible to give you a concise answer on whether going back to the factory original 5-blade fan will generate cooling problems....- Top

Peter-----
I can tell you this: MANY years ago (about 1971, or so) I decided that I wanted to improve the cooling in my 1969 300 hp convertible. So, I purchased the 7 blade GM #3955182 fan and replaced my original 5 blade fan. I noticed no discernable difference in cooling. There may and probably was some difference but I couldn't discern it quantitatively (or, for that matter, qualitatively).
Based upon what you describe as your cooling system situation, I don't think that the change to the original-style 5 bladed fan is, by itself, going to create any problems for you.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
