    Re: Old tires okay?

There is no industry standard tire shelf life or useful service life in terms of time. Of course, if I was a tire retailer, I'd like everyone to buy a new set of tires every year, just like the quicky oil change industry hypes 3000 mile oil changes, regardless of the manufactuer's recommendation.

Discount tire is just a retailer. They didn't design and build the tires and they don't have any tire engineers who understand the very complex subject of tire aging.

A word of warning. Most people do not understand how to prepare a car for long term storage. The fuel and cooling systems should be drained - the cooling system dried and the fuel system treated with a rust inhibiting preservative.

Assuming the car runs, suggest you change the coolant and use Zerex G-05 antifreeze and also change the brake fluid. The corrosion inhibitors get consumed with time and corrosion can develop in cooling and brake systems even if the car is not driven.

Of course, I'll assume you plan on changing the oil and filter and changing the trans and diff fluids would not be a bad idea either along with a very thorough inspection of hoses and any other organic material parts that are subject to degradation with time.

Any BRAND NEW TIRE, especially one that is not high speed rated can have hidden defects that can make them "lethal".

Let's not ge over-melodramatic without having some reasonable basis in sound science.

I'm gonna drive the hell out of it and have fun!

That's the way I see it! I restored my 55 for me and my family to enjoy , not to store away for some one els , were getting every dollar it's worth in the pleasure of driving it and being seen in it.

The dealership owner had his Service Director come in and meet me before I took delivery. He spent a half hour going over the details of how they serviced and prepped it before I finally gave it a home. I have all the service receipts for the internal maintenance service done. The week before I got it they changed every fluid: motor, trans, rear, antifreeze, drained the fuel tank, and pressure bled the brake fluid in all lines. ... But it's the silent and deadly dry rot of rubber that sends shivers up me spine!

Tires are dated, I found out the hard way. I kept with Firestones that were originally on the car. I bought brand new ones in 98 when I bought my 75 and had to replace them last year. They were out of balance and firstone could not get rid of the vibration. I put on a new set and now it purrs down the road. I agree with everyone else. Keep the originals for show and a set for driving. Its no fun having a car if you don't drive it.
