    original cars & parts

    Hi everybody!
I have and original car. It needs paint and the plating needs to be redone. My question is this. Keep in mind I want to keep the car original. The antenna mast is corroded, not badly but still has the green look and moves up and down slowly. The antenna motor still works. In order to remove the mast from the motor I have to remove the protective coating around the assembly. I am not sure but the coating could be some form of cosmolene. I don't think I spelled it correctly. Any way I am trying so carefully to preserve this car. What does one do when you have a car that has never been apart and you are trying to retain the survior condition and still make sure everthing works and looks good. I have the NCRS Judging manual and a few other booklets from NCRS. These books are so valueable.

I believe it was wax , I also rebuilt mine on a 66 I had and after I re-assembled it I melted a bow of candle wax , dipped it in to seal the unit and was done with it.

no roy, it wasn't wax. it was a type of plastic. oem glass has the material and they dip rebuilt antennas in it. looks like original protectant. mike

DO NOT try and fix anything if you are trying for SURVIVOR!

          Hi David,
I also have A "Bloomington Gold Survivor", it's a trade marked name, so when you use the word "survivor" be careful. I got a chewed out lesson for calling my NCRS 3 Star winner a Bowtie. Those are right off the top of my head, I am new & I only got my car in September. I have been preparing the car for Flight Judging in March. I'll tell you the mistake the previous owner made when he showed this 58, in the year 2000 & I now own. NCRS judging is much tougher than Bloomington. He should have left the paint alone. As I study the judging sheets from when the car got a 3rd flight & then he went back & fixed what NCRS took points for, he then won the Top Flight a few months later. Had he left the paint alone( He over compansated on the paint, it cost him the 4th star on the exterior) he would have gotten a 4th Star & a Bowtie award. I cannot re-show this car. It is a shame, because this car is so original & in great shape. If it Flight judges well in March, I will go to the National for a PV award. That is how much faith I have in this beautiful little car.I am really too new & the guys on this board are great, they will help you. I think you should ask them if you should just give it a good cleaning & get your car Flight Judged. Then the NCRS will tell you what needs to be done & you'll have the judgeing sheets for referance. I'm not sure if I'm right, but ask some of the guys on this board. This message will be way down on the bottom. So just ask the guys so you don't ruin your chances, you may have a Bowtie car. If your car is that original, you should go for the Bowtie, hard to achive, but with care, I'll bet you can do it. Good luck & I research alot, don't be afraid to ask me anything. I met alot of good people here & I can atleast point you in the right direction.
          Good Luck,
          Deb

Thanks for your input! Unfortunately I am 3/4 of the way thru stripping the paint. I am having so much fun fixing and getting things to work on this car I can not explain the satisfaction I get from this project. My wife doesn't feel
            the same.Oh Well!
