    vin numbers

I have heard that some time around the first of the year 2005 that Chevrolet Motor Division was going to provide all of the information and options of a vehicles by way of the vin number. Does any body know any updated information?

    Thanks
    David

    Re: vin numbers

Not going to happen, just wishful thinking. This thread pops up once every couple of months.

Fun excersise - How many want the info...

...how many don't. B/J, dealers & others probably would rather not deal with these frivilous details.

The data for 1977 and up exists and is available. I will be a dollar to a donut that we never see the earlier data. Too much research has been done to find it and the only clues indicate that St Louis destroyed it.

First place I got wind of this information was from a friend that worked at Gm and knows a number of knowledgeable people with in the company. The next place was in one of the magazines I get. The article talked about Pontiac Motor Division and how they supply the information.

Jim Mattison, who owns ASC (Automotive Services Corp.), which is the parent company of PHS (Pontiac Historic Services) which supplies the original Pontiac build information, spent the last three years under contract to Chevrolet looking for the production records, and nothing has surfaced (and I think the search ended last year). There were two massive internal searches in the mid-90's, and they didn't turn anything up either. GM Media Archives can supply dealer invoices for '77-up Corvettes and the NCM can supply build sheets and window stickers for Bowling Green-built Corvettes, but that's about it.
