    1969 Quadrajet Carb problem

I am having a lot of problems finding a replacement fast idle cam for my 1969 427/390.... junkyards and suppliers were not helpful. Mine is plastic and is cracked... I am sure that it has been upgraded at some point? Suggestions????

    Ed,

Contact Phil Cancilla @ Custom Rebuilt Carbs. ( thecarburetorman@aol.com )
I'm sure he has either a good replacement for you, or can get you what you
need. Incidently, Phil does all of my carb restorations.

The fast idle cams for your application are GM-discontinued. If you car is an automatic, then you are looking for cams of either GM #7038845 or 7036820. If it's a 4 speed, then you need GM #703844 or 7036819. These are "around"; they shouldn't be too hard to find.

          Harold----

Yes, these 68-69 carbs originally used a plastic fast idle cam. There were different colors denoting different applications. One was "whitish", another green, and another red. These pieces often crack with heat and age. They do have an "a-arm" and "teeth" (steps) on the bottom, just like the metal variety. However, they are much thicker in cross-section than the metal type.

Many of the replacement carbs for 68-69 applications, as well as many other Q-Jets used a metal cam. I don't think that these can be retrofitted to original 68-69 carbs with the plastic style cams.

            Re: Carb

Hey guys, thanks for the response!! It is for a 4-speed and the color now is kinda tanish (so I think it was originally white?) I don't have a photo of it at present. The body is thick.

Yes, that's the GM #7038844. Later examples of this piece might be a different color (red, if I recall correctly). The early ones were "whitish" or "tanish".

                    Carb

Ed I don't have a plastic one I have never seen one the only thing I can figure is that buy the time these carbs got around to me they were probably rebuilt and I would think the rebuilders might have replaced them with metal ones. Do you have the cam off the carb? If so send me a pic or send me the part and I can see if the metal ones will work. They were probably discontinued because that part made of plastic would not last very long on a car that was driven daily. I bought a core carb for parts that I need for a carb Iam working on and the guy says it has a plastic cam on it (RED) I haven't recieved it yet.
