I read in Nolan Adam's book that black tops were availeable for black and white and black cars. Tan and white were availeable for all other colors. Does this mean that black was not availeable for all other colors?

NCRS publications are the correct references, as they are the standard against which the car is judged. Both the Spec Guide and the Third Edition '57 JG indicate that black, beige, and white tops were available on all colors except Aztec Copper (only beige or white) and Inca Silver (only black or white).

Thanks John, Im glad I asked. I was about to give up on a black top, but when Al Knoch interiors said black was OK I decided to check. Where can I get those manuals?
