Guy's I could use some help, I need to find who still makes a performance whitewalled radial tires for my 66 driver. I have talked to several dealers and can't find any one who still makes a performance tire in a whitewall.
thanks for your help
Go to www.tirerack.com click the "search by size" link, input size 215/70R-15, and limit the search to H through Z speed ratings. There might be a whitewall there, but I doubt it.
You can also search the other mail order sites like discount tire and all the manufacturers' web sites.
Personally I would ditch the whitewalls and go for the one W-rated tire that is only available in blackwall.
If you want whitewalls, there are plenty in the 205/75R-15 size that feature low or no speed ratings and rock hard compounds. They are usually pretty cheap and just right for beaters, but not sports cars.
If you really have to have whitewalls you can usually order the tire of your choice through a well known vendor (forgot the name) and have them put a whitewall of other color stripe sidewall treatment on the tires. This service will considerably raise the price, but a new set of tires on an occasionally driven Corvette should last at least ten years, so you have to decide if it's worth the additional cost.
I went to Costco and bought up some of the last BFG 'Touring' radials. They(BFG) went to a new 'Premier Touring' which simply has more wording around the perimeter and looks more modern. They both have the narrow whitewall siding and come in the 215/70/15 sizing. I bought mine for about $35.00/each not mounted. They look period correct for my 67 coupe with the thinner whitewall, then say back during the C1 era. I don't know the rating, but BFG's(radial TA) have been some of the best radials I have driven on hotrods. They handle really well, are inexpensive, and last quite long.
