I have a 66 Roadster and would like to add radial tire. I know that the 205/75/15 replaces the 775/15 bias ply which I have on now. Can anyone tell me if a 215/70/15 will fit and clear front and rear wheel wells or are they too wide. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you

Re: Tire Size
I run Firestone 215/70 Radials on my '66, on knock-offs....If I make a real tight right-hand turn, I get a little rub mark on the frame horn. No problems with my fender wheels.- Top

In review of the message, I meant to say that I have experienced no clearance problems with the fender wells or the fender's fibreglass.- Top

Re: Tire Size
Seth, There are several variables when it comes to choosing a tire for a midyear. Rim size, front coil springs, alignment, even tire air pressure will effect whether a given tire will work. Also, a 205/75R-15 made by Goodyear will be slightly different in actual size than the same size manufactured by Firestone, BF Goodrich, or Uniroyal. The 205/75R-15 tire will almost always fit and not rub provided your front end is in alignment and your springs are good. 215/75R-15's will usually rub when making a hard turn into a driveway or parking lot with any kind of depression for drainage. I have seen quite a few people with 215/65R-15's lately, and they swear they don't rub, but I don't have any personal experience with this size on my '66. The 215/65R-15 was an OEM size on 82-92 Camaro's and is very easy to find and inexpensive. Warning...I doubt seriously that you will get one of these to fit in the spare tire tub on a midyear! I use 205/75R-15's mounted on 6" wide Reproduction Knock-Offs and they have never rubbed. NCRS #33257- Top

Re: Tire Size
I've had interference problems with 205s rubbing the frame also. Converting to metric... 7.75 in x 25.4 = 196.8mm, I switched to Uniroyal Tiger Paw radials a few years back at 195 70 15 mounted to stock steel wheels. No interference at all. If you can still get them it is closest size to 7.75 and the whitewalls are pretty close.- Top

Re: Tire Size
I'm using 195-75r15 tires on my 66 with steel wheels. The only rub is on the frame (carraige) bolt on the left front. I have had a lot of people tell me that wider tires on their cars don't rub, but when I point to the shiny spot on the LF frame of their cars - they say "oh.. I didn't notice that".- Top
