    Steel Wheel Straightening

Anyone know of a wheel shop in CT, NY, NJ, or MA that will take a curb dent out of a Rally Wheel? All the shops I have contacted in Southern CT say they will not work on steel rims. Thanks, Bill

    Bill,

I know you are looking for a shop to repair your steel wheel on the east coast, but I have a few shops that I know of that work on steel wheels. One is Trudesign Wheel, Inc. in Denver, Colorado, their number is 1-800-621-6436. They advertise that they repair OEM alloy and steel wheels. I had a pair of Buick Grand National chrome steel wheels widened from 7 inches to 8 inches with a custom 4" back spacing. The wheel turned out beautifully, balanced out with no problems and they are straight with almost zero run-out. They do excellent work! The other company is Stockton Wheel in Stockton, CA. You can look their phone number up on their internet website at www.stocktonwheel.com.

    Hope this helps!

    Best Regards,

Yep, Truedesign does good work and there's a competing shop in Denver. But, most shops that work on wheels will automatically tell you they don't work on steel wheels because it's expensive and once they quote a price or do the work customers often 'explode' when the bill is HIGHER than the cost of a fresh, off-the-shelf, replacement steel wheel.

So, when you call around looking for a shop that'll true your wheel and they tell you they don't do that work, spend a few more minutes with the shop owner. Often, telling him it's from a classic car any you're after salvaging the original date codes on the wheel and you know you'll pay more than a the cost of a replacement wheel, gets the job done. Typical costs for truing a steel wheel here in Denver run $90-150 depending on how badly it's damaged....

I did considerable digging to find a place to straighten the wheels on my 76. I have NOT yet had the work done, however, I found two places that were willing to do it. Wheel Repair Service of New England, 317 Southbridge Street, Route 12, Auburn, MA 01501, Voice: 508-832-4949, Fax: 508-832-3969 (I spoke with Fred Belanger about a year ago). And Foster's Wheel Service in the Seattle suburbs, they are listed, and the guy I talked with was Cory. Foster's has a good reputation for being able to fix Lotus steel wheels and when I called them they were willing to work on my rally's. Wheel Repair of New England specializes in wire wheels but can also do "disc" wheels which includes rally's. As I said, this info is about a year old and I have not sent my wheels to either yet. I'd appreciate it if you could let me know anything else you find out.
