I've got a '63 and I'm needing to restore an oil cannister. Does anyone make a stencil so that I may restore my cannister myself? Or if they don't, who do y'all use to do this for you? Aloha Irby

Re: Silkscreen stencil for oil cannisters
Irby,
I do not know of anyone who makes a "do it yourself" stencil kit. I called Paragon and inquired about the cost to stencil my oil canister. I was quoted $124 for powder coating and stenciling. I told them I had the the oil canister restored and painted and wanted only the stencil added, no dice, it's their way or no way. I bought the sticker from CC and will take the 1 or 2 point deduct for the sticker in place of the stencil. This is almost as bad as the $80 air cleaner wing nut.

Re: Silkscreen stencil for oil cannisters
Buy the decal, trim the excess material off outside of the white lines. Install it on your cannister. Take clear spray paint and slowly fog the decal and can. You can make most of the edge of the decal disappear. I was doing this before they started screeing cans.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: Silkscreen stencil for oil cannisters
Many have personally built their own silkscreens but won't publically admit it nor offer commercial silk screening services. Why? Intellectual property rights....
The oil can uses GM, part specific words/numbers. Absent a reproduction license from GM, one would be 'infringing' on GM's intellectual property rights to offer a silkscreen service. I suspect that's why Paragon gets as much as they do for their service.
BUT, you, as an individual, have the right to restore/maintain the marks on a GM original part that you bought and have legal title to. Now, the rub is how to absorb the cost of making your own silkscreen....
What folks out here have done is stand up at chapter meeting and find volunteers to donate parts & 'share' in a common silkscreen run. They find a silkscreen shop who'll make a screen using the 'best' of their existing oil cans, then prep the cans for a common silkscreen run. When 8-10 guys pool together, the cost (setup + run) drops to something like $8-15/cannister.- Top

Re: Silkscreen stencil for oil cannisters
Thanks to all for responses. Jack, after my wife saw my post, she suggested that I go to one of the local custom t-shirt silk-screening shops here. I think I may check to see what the cost of having it done there. If it is cost prohibitive, I'll probably do what James and Dick suggested with the sticker. There's not a big following here in Hawaii so getting a dozen guys out here to share cost in a project is improbable. Thanks again to all.- Top
