    fouling plugs in 1, 7, 2, 8

Recently started my 76 L48 engine after storage. It missed wildly and barely ran. I noticed that cylinders 1,7,2, and 8 (the fronts and rears on both sides) were not firing at all. In fact, the exhaust manifolds at those positions were stone cold while the middle cylinders were running. I removed the plugs and found 1,7,2,and 8 to be badly fouled. I changed to a new set of plugs and she runs ok now but am wondering if this is an indication of looming trouble? I haven't checked compression at this point. Comments? Thank you.

You don't give much to go on but:

If your engine ran okay before storage, it is likely okay now. Did you fog the cylinders as some people do for storage? If you did, that will sometimes foul the plugs. Another thing comes to mind. You have a vacuum choke pull off on the carb that cracks the choke butterfly slightly open on start up. Check for proper operation. If it is not working properly it can gas foul a weak set of plugs in a heartbeat. These things deteriorate with heat and time.

If you don't have black or blue exhaust coming out the back, I wouldn't worry about it.

Mike, thanks for your thoughts. It didn't run great before it went into storage. Always seemed to be running rich (blackish smoke and rich exhaust odor) and often stumbled at the transition from idle to higher RPM. Was also occasionally popping back thru the carb. I have owned for a couple of years but have driven it very little. My concern was that since 1,7,2 and 8 were "end" cylinders and "proverbially" hotter running that they were worn, valves were burnt, valve seals were brittle, or worse. I suppose the next step should be to do a compression check and if nothing is revealed proceed to work on the ignition. If ignition (as in weak HEI and components) is not the main problem it is certainly contributory. I'd like to rebuild the distributor because of miles alone... But there is no mistaking that changing the plugs made a HUGE difference. Choke pull-off is working. Thanks.

        Mike:

I believe I would look at the float in your quadri-jet. It may be fuel soaked and causing your carb to run way rich. A very common problem.
