    C-1 undercarraige

on a 58 270hp car, should the underside of the floorpan be natural vs painted black?
should the leaf springs be black or gray cast?
are the baking plates on the brakes black or grey cast?
are there any non black components on or attached to the frame?
i am finishing my rolling chassis and recently saw two different cars supposed to be ncrs cars one with painted bottom and exhaust, gray leaf springs and grey backing plates on the brakes? thanks

I am not sure if the 58 is the same as the 61, but I just completed a 61 and can provide the following information:

    Floor pan: natural

Rear spring: natural or painted semi-gloss black or semi-gloss black with the top leaf painted silver.

    Backing plates: semi-gloss black

Frame: every thing that arrive with the frame I painted semi-gloss black, the balance I followed the JG and evidence seen during restoration.

I have some good pictures of original steering and drive train markings if you are interested.

Chris - I am finishing up my 58 chassis at this moment too. I have been asking the same kind of questions and not getting a lot of answers. For instance, are the leaf springs and liners painted semi-gloss black after being attached to frame or were the individual leafs painted before the liners were installed? Also, do the rubber bumpers on frame over the rear get painted or were they installed after? I want to do it right and only once! If you get any answers, please let me know. THanks. Purchase the judging guide from NCRS and get the Noland Adams restoration guide. This will answer many of your questions.

I am with you guys in the confusion. I think it comes from the different jobs done on the cars at the factory. Some great references that you may find helpful are in the restorer of spring 86, fall 88 and winter 2001. Richard Brodeur has a great article in winter 2001 that lists all the painted parts and unpainted parts he found on his 1960 original that he restored. Tom
