    Sealant over windshield wiper brackets

There was some kind of hard black tar covering the windshield wiper brackets under the grills on my 67. Under the brackets was the non hardening black sealant so what was the purpose of this tar? What is the recommended stuff to use when recoating this area under the grills?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Re: Sealant over windshield wiper brackets

    Scott,

I have the same on my '65, and it seems to be there to ensure a water-tight seal around where the wiper shafts pass through into the plenum. I used black "dum-dum" putty to re-seal. It comes in a waxed-paper lined roll of about 3/4 inch width by 3/8 inch thickness, and is apparently available at auto parts stores. I received some with my car/parts when I bought it.

      Thanks Grant

I've got a box of that putty to install under the brackets. I was wondering if guys still apply some type of spray tar over the brackets as well.

        Scott -

The black "tar" material applied to the base of the wiper transmission after assembly is non-hardening vinyl plastisol body seam sealer; any automotive paint store will have it.

Great, after all those years it sure gets hard

I had to chisel that stuff off with a paint scrapper! I found it over a couple brackets on the firewall too.

          Thanks John,

All I could find was 3M

            John,
All I could find at the auto body supply yesterday that was none hardening was 3M black bedding and glazing sealant that was paintable. Seems like this stuff will do the trick.
