    Numbers, Numbers, & More Numbers...

On my 68 coupe, on the underside (interior) of the rear deck, just above where the rear window storage tray is located, there are several numbers which I can find no reference to in any publication. There are three lines all written in yellow crayon/chalk/grease pencil.

On the first line is "324-1"; on the second line is "4-3"; and on the third line is an "x" with a circle around it. I suspect the 4-3 is April 3rd which is three days prior to the cars build date. However, I have no idea what the other markings mean.

If anyone can help or has similar examples, I would appreciate it.

    Kevin -

Chances are the "324-1" means Body Shop sequence #324, run on 1st Shift - this was an internal tracking number that rotated back to zero every thousand cars and is not related to any other number on the car or the build sheet. The "4-3" is most likely April 3rd, as you mentioned, and fits right in with a "build date" three days later - it took about three days for a car to get through the Body Shop and the Paint Shop before loading onto the Trim Line, which is where the body code plate (which has the "build date" on it) and the VIN plate were applied.

I can't speak for 1968's, but my 1970 build sheet, found behind the dash had the build sequence number 162 hand written on it. This number I also found in yellow grease pencil on the behind the seats storage area floor boards a few weeks ago when lifting up the original carpet. Also written on the floor panel below the sequence number was AC and 467. Below that was a big wide X. I presume the 467 is the Convertible code, and AC is obvious. My convertible came equipped with AC. I don't know what the X is for. Possiby some other info goes there for cars equipped with some other option??? Mine is an automatic BTW. I don't know if the 162 number appears anywhere else on the vehicle since I haven't disassembled much... yet anyways. :) Picture of my build sheet is here:
