C2 outside door lock key slot

I am in the process of installing the outside door handles and and locks on my 65 convertable. My question, the keyway slot (where you put the key to lock or unlock the car) is not centered, it is more to the front of center on one lock and more to the rear on the other. Should both keyway slots be to the front on both sides of the car or to the rear??? The lock part number is 8124 on both locks. Should there be 2 different part numbers one for each door?

Re: C2 outside door lock key slot

FLOYD - I CHECKED MY '67 CORVETTE AND '66 CHEVELLE AND BOTH HAVE THE DRIVER'S SIDE LOCK WITH THE KEY SLOT BACK OF THE VERTICLE CENTER LINE AND THE PASSENGER'S SIDE LOCK WITH THE KEY SLOT IN FORWARD OF THE VERTICLE CENTER LINE.

KEYS SHOULD GO IN TO THE KEY SLOT WITH THE CUT EDGE ON THE KEY SHAFT DOWN.

THE FOUR DIGIT NUMBER 8124 (WHICH I EXPECT IS STAMPED ON THE DOOR LOCK CASE) IS THE KEY NUMBER RATHER THAN A PART NUMBER SO THEY SHOULD BE THE SAME IF THE KEY IS TO OPERATE BOTH DOOR LOCKS. THIS SHOULD BE THE SAME NUMBER THAT IS STAMPED ON YOUR IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER CORE IF THE LOCKS ARE ORIGINAL TO THE CAR. ALSO, THE ORIGINAL GLOVEBOX LOCK CORE WILL GENERALLY HAVE A FOUR DIGIT NUMBER STAMPED ON IT WHICH WILL BE THE KEY NUMBER. WITH THE KEY NUMBERS A LOCKSMITH OR YOUR CHEVROLET DEALER CAN CUT A KEY. IF YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL KEYS THE OCTAGON HEAD IGNITION/DOOR LOCK KEY, WOULD HAVE THE 8124 STAMPED ON THE "KNOCK OUT." THE "ROUND" HEAD GLOVEBOX/SPARE TIRE LOCK KEY WOULD HAVE THE NUMBER STAMPED ON THE GLOVEBOX LOCK CORE.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE LOCKS. PETE

Maybe you need to swap from side to side..........

the keyway slot should be vertical with the teeth in the key pointed downward when inserted into the lock. Turning the key should then lock toward the rear of the car.

Re: C2 outside door lock key slot - Peter

        Peter,
Thanks for taking the time to go and check your door locks for me, at least now I know that the door locks went the way you stated. When I removed the handles and locks I never noticed how the door locks were oriented. I thought GM would have had both locks oriented the same way.

        Thanks again,
        Floyd
