Re: solinod
The third (and previous?) editions of the 1956-57 judging manual correctly identified the solenoid part number. The "improved" fourth edition has been revised to incorrectly specify the 1119767 solenoid for 1956. It has S and R posts. I believe it's application was for 1955 passenger cars (I'm not positive about that, so I won't put it in a '55 Chevy passenger car judging manual). Roy might be able to enlighten us on the crank accessory.- Top

Bernard:
I wrote an article, which has been published in the Restorer, identifying the 9767 as an early solenoid and the 9789 as a later unit used in 1956. There was a design change of tabs on the 9789 to help hold the rubber boot on. Both the 9767 and the 9789 should be considered correct for 1956. The 9789 has been verified on a late 56 by an original owner.- Top

Bernard, I'm in complete agrement with you on the 789 solnoid being the correct number for the '56 CCorvette. Since the 4th Judging Manual has been published, myself and several I believe this is one area that should be corrected in the next Judging Manual. I've found Known owners of originnal '56's believe the 789 solenoid is correct as well. Huts to see the 4th edition take a sept backwards! Regards,- Top

Re: solinod
I have seen both but have always regarded the 9767 as a 1955 part. The judging manual no longer mentions the 9789; it was dropped entirely in favor of the 9767. Although not originally provided, the 9767 will retain the rubber boot even without the extra flanges.- Top

Re: solinod
Jim,
And how do you feel about having to replace your differential carrier now that it supposed to be a 899 casting? It's hard to get the casting dates right when the part you need for your '56 wasn't produced until the following model year isn't it?

Re: solinod
Bernard, Yep, get your point! To tell the truth I never paind much attention to the book om trear emd numbers. Years ago.I found a good(for my '56) bare rear end at . Right before the Windsor national I pulled the '63 posi pumpkin I hd been using forever), changed the ring and pinion (along with the posi unit) and put it all into a pumpkin cast 3707306. date cast D 196. Must have done OK, Didn't manage to scatter the gears on the National Road tour! Regards- Top
