    trans for 1963

I have an opportunity to buy a trans for my 1963- I tried to check online with Muncie and could only verify the main casting number. Anyone help with the rest of these numbers? main -3831704, tail # 3831731, side ways number on left side B241092, LOWER NUMBER ON LEFT SIDE #P0523. Thanks for any help in figuring what these numbers mean.

      Joe,
I don't have the casting numbers in front of me now, but I can tell you it was originally installed in a late Baltimore built Passenger car.

DONALD ; in my opinon this is a 1963 muncicie trans . it is a m 20 for a low h/p 327/250 eng.it should have # 604932 on the front ret. bearing cover.it can be used on late serial # cars after # 15'000. all the numbers you have provided indicate 1963 only . 2.56 first gear- 1.91 second gear- 1.48 third gear- 1.00 fourth gear.. 10 spline input --24 spline output. hope this helps..

Joe, Nancy is correct. There was an article in the Restorer Volume 11 #1 Summer 84, titled "1963 Early Munci Four Speed Transmission". In that article it mentions the same casting numbers. Also, the P0523 indicates muncie (P) and omoth was may (05) and the day was the 23. Also, in the Restorer Volume 13 #2 Fall 1986 is an exception article PP54-69 on "Rebuilding the Muncie 4-speed". I used this when I rebuilt a 67 and changed to a wide ratio gear set taken from a 69 Muncie. This article has a chart that shows the gear make up of the M20 in both the wide ratio and close ratio transmission. Acccrding to this table the inputs are all 10 teeth and the outputs 27 teeth.

If you don't have access to either article, email me sepeately with your address and I will scan and send you a PDF file of each article.

Are you sure your car used a Muncie? *NM*
