Pricing a 69 BB

Has anyone found an accurate place to fix a value to a specific corvette, specifically a 69 big block coupe? If you start looking in the NCRS Driveline or Hemmings book, the prices are wildly spread across a huge range. Gary

I just bought a 69 427/390. Now that the rush has subsided, I think I paid $500 to $2,000 too much. I like the car and it is fun to drive. It needs a lot of work to get it where it should be, but it is driveable (at least until the clutch dies).


Advice I got when I first started looking a few months ago. Go to a place that has a lot of Vettes to look at. The biggest problem for me was there was nothing for sale near me. Its hard to travel hours by plane or auto to look at cars you don't want and it costs money. Remember the seller is putting the best possible spin on the car, so try to be realistic when they tell you the car is in good shape. Its in good shape by their opinion.


Take your time. I know, I could've done worse, but I could've done better.

My wife and I, in 1995, started to look for a 68-72 BB automatic coupe or convertible. As you have said, prices are all over the scale. We looked at a number of cars...Bloomington, Carlisle, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, N. Carolina, etc. We finally bought one over the Labor Day weekend, 1997, after looking for nearly 2 years. We looked at about 30 cars. It's a 69 roadster, OM auto, 427/400, tank sticker, etc. We paid $20,500.00 for it and thought we got a deal compared to a lot of the junk we looked at. Many of my Corvette friends told me that I should be able to find a nice car in the low to mid teens. I did not find that to be true. As others have said, owners put the best "spin" on their car. You have to look for yourself, and that requires travel, in most cases.


Check the usual places...frame, body damage, etc. It's my opinion that you're better off paying more for a better car. If you have to chase down original parts, or have to pay a lot to improve cosmetics....paint, chrome, interior, etc., it will end up costing you more. Hope this helps. Chuck

Thanks Juliet, these are the type of sites I was looking for. Since I am just starting my search, the more info that I can get, the better off I will be. As a 66 SB owner, I at least have the background to know where to start looking and will be breaking out my Restorer, issue 16-1, with all of the numbers. Gary
