    where'd my gears go? ('60)

Out for a drive today, finally. Leaving a parking lot, heard a small "thunk" when I let the clutch out in 1st. Shifted into 2nd, and when I let out the clutch, it didn't engage. Found out a minute later that fourth was gone too. I managed to limp home in 1st and 3rd. Unfortunately, I'm not an expert in transmissions - any help out there?

    thanks

Being that second and fourth gear are not on the same lever, fork, or sliding clutch I would start with the shifter. I do not know of any inherent problems with the shifter but that would be my starting point.

Thank you Dick. Your instincts were right, although it wasn't the shifter. After work, I got under the car again, and this time noticed (!) that the cross-member holding up the transmission had lost both nuts on one side, and had dropped onto the lower 'shelf' of the frame. I put this back in place, and all systems are go. Must have interfered just enough with the linkage to cause my problem.
