Need advice please. Are these pumps generic or do they have specific numbers? Removed and stored mine 4 years ago, ran fine at the time. Is it reusable or has sitting in box on shelf for 4 years without fluid done damage? If it needs to be replaced, do 68s have a specific pump or does one-size-fit-all? Thank you in advance for any input. Kurt Bunting NCRS 26406

Re: 68 Power Steering Pump
Kurt-----
The Corvette power steering pumps probably have a date code on them somewhere, but I'm not familiar with it. Basically, Corvette power steering pumps are the same as other Chevrolet products for a given model year series.
Power steering pumps consist of two primary components---the pump assembly and the resevoir. For model years 1963 thru 1974 the Corvette pump used a resevoir which had a seperate, oval shaped fill tube spot-welded to the round body of the resevoir. Also, during these years the pump used a shaft with a slightly tapered pulley seat and threads on the end for a special, prevailing torque-type, pulley retaining nut. There may have been some very small differences in the pumps during these production years as one would expect for a component that was manufactured in VERY LARGE numbers and, most likely, on different tooling.
In 1975 the configuration of the power steering pumps changed. The resevoir was now a "one-piece", tear-drop shaped type, with NO attached fill tube. The filler opening was now integral with the resevoir body. Also, at this time, the pump shaft changed. The pump now had a straight shaft with no taper or threads. The pulley was an interference(press) fit on the shaft.
Your pump ought to be ok even though it's been sitting "dry" for some time. However, you can obtain a kit from most of the Corvette vendors to rebuild it. The 63-74 power steering pump is GM-discontinued. The seperate pump assembly, in new form, is also discontinued, but available from AC-Delco in rebuilt form. The resevoir, though, is still available from GM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 Power Steering Pump
Thank you Joe for your most informative response to my question. I am pleased that it does not need to be replaced as (you know) I am trying to keep as many original parts as I can on this car. Was not aware the unit could be disassembled and rebuilt with a kit. Will pursue that option. Much appreciate your input. Kurt Bunting- Top
