    Re: 75 engine painting

    Eric-----

The engine does not need to be primed and I don't recommend it. The reason is that the final paint job will appear too thick and thicker than the factory ever usually did it.

If you use a good quality engine paint, it is a self-priming type of thing. By 1975 the engine paint had gotten "decidedly orange". I think that the paint available from Quanta will do you well, though. It might be just a little bit more red than original, but it will be very close. They have it available in both spray cans and pints/quarts, so take your pick.

My block was painted a "cast iron gray" at the machine shop after it was thermo cleaned. Shop said they have to paint it or it will rust before I get it home. Seems all shops do it.

          mine was too.
I scuffed every inch of the block assy with a red scotch brite pad
I spent an entire day - scuffing every nook and cranny
then blew the engine off with compressed air
then wiped the engine assy down with a wax and grease remover
and then wiped it down again.
There are alot of oils and lubes used in machining and assy of the
          engine
Alot of prep will turn out a nice finish.
I variprime then several coats with color

My car 71 SB, seems to burn off at the cross over spot. I have repainted once already, and since I drive my car alot, I get dinged on points. Has any body who drives their car on a regular basis been able to find and have success with any type of paint? Has any one used POR 15 color paint and does it match the rest of the engine orange?

When they dinged for cross over burned paint on the intake ,you should ask them to take the words (we encourage Corvettes to be driven) out of the JM.

Hi Eric, I also own a "75" 44K mile unrestored vette and I sure enjoy driving her.If you want to keep the car as original as possible take a good look at the motor before the rebuild {nothing is perfect} the engine block was painted with no primer and not thick either. The heat passage on the intake may discolor after about 10K miles, but that is the factory way, so it's too bad that cars loose marks for natural aging. I'm a keeping it "factory nut" and enjoy looking at a car which is original looking than one that is too perfect because we all know not one car was perfect.

Hope your wife will enjoy the vette as much as it sounds like you are.
                    Ken.
