Equivalent Radial Tire Size For Spare

It is my understanding that 225/70 SR15 is the closest radial match to the original tires fitted to a 1961. However, I have heard that size may not fit into the spare tire well without letting out some air. Can anyone confirm this or provide a modern tire size (for the spare only) that they KNOW fits without alteration?

The radial equivalent to the original 6.70-15 is a 205/75-15, and it won't fit in the well diameter-wise (at least on a '57). I used a Coker repro 6.70-15 BFG Silvertown as the spare on my '57, and it fit fine diameter-wise in the well, but it raised the cover board about 1/4" above flush with the floor. I think you have to go down to a 195/75 or 185/75 radial to fit both diameter- and section width-wise in the well. Maybe others have more specifics.

My friend next store came by a 1500.00 mile 55 4 door Chevy.He took the original tire off plus a NOS spare tire which I got for my spare in the trunk which fits perfect. The other four are good as a spare but black walls. Any one interested can e-mail me he wont's $30.00 each plus shipping.
At least you can get your trunk board down and have a spare that can be used holding AIR.and when you go for the big award change cover to the repro that don't fit.
