    2 piece urethane rear bumper - '74

Is anyone aware of a catalog source for 2 piece urethane rear bumpers and accomodating mounting accessories, or is this a find limited to a Corvette bone yard? Thanks.

Ray, I'm sorry but I don't know of a source to buy these new but I do know you won't find any that are usable in the boneyard. These get very brittle with age. I replaced them on my '74 several years ago with NOS available at the time. The cost was three times the cost of Eckler's fiberglas replacement but I wanted original. Later however I saw '74's on the judging field with the fiberglas. I don't know the point deduction on them but it's something to consider if necessary. Regards, Jim

      Jim and Ray-----

I agree. I wouldn't EVER recommend purchasing a used example of one of these urethane bumpers. These things are a very life-limited component and, by now, the life of them on many 74 models is "used up". A car that's been garaged for most of it's life might have a usable bumper but, the chances are, such a bumper is not going to come up for sale on the used market. Almost by definition, it's going to remain on that car.

The piece that you're looking for was GM #339195 and it was discontinued in October, 1995. I'll bet that there aren't too many NOS examples around these days and if you did find one the price would likely be astronomical.

I don't think that this bumper is reproduced in its original, 2-piece form. However, there may be a urethane reproduction with a simulated center seam on the reproduction market. I'm not even sure of that, though.

Re: 2 piece urethane rear bumper - '74

The bumper that I have on the car now is a one-piece, simulated seam, flexiglas bumper. When judged at a local Chapter Meet, my point loss for this bumper was -10 for Originality. My question arose out of curosity, for since then, I have given thought to replacing this bumper with an an original design 2-piece. Based on a couple of the responses, chances of locating an NOS urethane bumper will be slim...and very costly. So if I was to replace the current bumper with what is readily available, other than gaining the original 2-piece bumper design, I believe I would still receive a loss in points for the non-original material makeup of the replacement bumper. Any thoughts from those more familar with the judging aspects on this item as to how many points would be lost, and also what is the difference between a regular 2-piece and a Flex-Fit...I see that Eckler's offers both, with the later being priced about $60 more? Thanks.

I put an Eckler's true two piece "Flex-Fit" on my Orange '74 Bowtie/Survivor coupe(yes, Bowtie cars too need maintenance & items replaced). Had it "Survivored" @ BG last year and my bumper looks so good & original 95% of the people viewing my car thought it was "ORIGINAL".
