    C2-1965 327/300

When rebuilding a high milage (100,000 miles) engine, is replacement of the exhaust manifolds something that must be done, should be done or only done if the manifolds are cracked?

    Thanks for any comments.

I would not replace unless they were cracked or broke. You should be able to sandblast and treat with your choice of coatings (I use Eastwood high temp cast iron color). Don H.

Agreed. Absolutely no reason to replace a good manifold. You won't gain anything and you will loose an original part.

          Dwight:

On my '65 with the same engine, I used a very rough grit sandpaper (#30 I believe) on a 2X4 board to true up the mounting surfaces of the manifolds. The manifolds bolt directly to the cylinder head without gaskets. You can pay a shop to true up your manifolds, or you can do it like I did. (If the surfaces don't sand evenly with just a few strokes of the sanding board, you might want to consult a machine shop.)

There are lots of good exhaust manifold treatments around. My cars are drivers, and I use Stove-Brite spray in the charcoal color. Available at most good hardware stores. Lasts for 5+ years. Wire brush the manifolds and paint them. Easy as that!

          Good luck with your project,

          Mark

Dwight, you wouldn't rebuild the original engine on that beautiful one owner car, would you?
