    Rear vents 69 conv.

I am getting ready to put new carpet in my 69 Conv. there are 2 vents in the back under the convertible deck. How do they operate? What color should they be painted? I have looked in my judging maual in the interior section and I don't see any referance to these vents or color. Mine are black now and don't seem to have been painted. There seems to be a cable or a lever that should fasten on the right hand side one, but I have nothing there. I would like to correct what ever needs to be done while I am working back in that area anyway. Thanks in advance for the help.

    Tom-----

The vents that you are referring to are the "Astro-Ventillation" rear vents. The "doors" were originally painted semi-gloss black and there was a foam rubber seal. The "doors" were actuated by a vacuum actuator located on the passenger side and controlled by vacuum signal from the console heater control unit.

All of the parts for this system, including the actuator, are long-since GM-discontinued. Dr. Rebuild has available some of the "soft" parts in reproduction. I don't think that he has any of the actuators, although he MAY be able to fix you up with one that will be functional, if not exactly "correct".

      Joe,

Coincidentally, I'm replacing the carpet in my '69 conv. too. I didn't give this a second thought until now. I see the foam rubber seal that you refer to, and each "door" is held in place by three screws. How do they operate if they're screwed in?

I believe that the vents were non-functional on C-60-equipped cars, although I didn't realize that this was accomplished with screws. It makes sense, though.

Mine is C-60 equipped so I'm not going to worry about it, thanks!

            Joe
Thanks for the help. I will try Dr. Rebuild and see what he has available. If no luck I will leave both open, you can't get tooo much air through one of these cars in Florida in the summer time. Thanks again.

              Hi Tom,

I own a 69 convertible with C60 option. The rear vents under the carpet are closed with sheet metal plates which are painted semi-gloss black. No actuator or other parts are there.

              Hope it helps
